Insurance Boost for The Year of Food and Farming

Plans to people with where their food comes from by getting them out onto farms have received a boost from an unexpected quarter - CLA Insurance Services. The company, which operates insurance services for the CLA, the rural economy experts, has decided to lend its support to The Year of Food and Farming by offering free public liability cover to policyholders who organise a public event on their farm.

CLA President, Henry Aubrey-Fletcher, said: “One of the key aims of the Year of Food and farming is to get children and young people out on to farms so that they can develop a much better understanding of the way in which food is produced, who produces it and where. One of the great stumbling blocks to this ambition is the perceived risk involved and the need for extended public liability insurance – so this decision by our insurers is welcome news indeed.”

CLA Insurance Services is an independent broker and arranges farm insurance for members with a number of leading insurers. Each of these has agreed to extend the public liability section of cover for participating policyholders’ at no extra cost.

Adrian Locker said the move was a demonstration of the company’s commitment to the farming community.

“We hope this will ease the way for farmers who wish to undertake an open farm event in connection with The Year of Food and Farming, but recognise the potential increased insurance risk associated, with members of the public visiting a working farm,” he said.

For this additional insurance cover to be effective, all that the member needs to do is contact CLA Insurance Services in advance of the event taking place. The company will also supply a safety checklist to ensure the event runs successfully.
