YEAR OF FOOD AND FARMING PLEDGES PASS THE 20,000 MARK!

Yesterday support for the Year of Food and Farming exceeded a milestone of 20,000 pledges. Over 17,000 young people have now pledged to take part in the Year and nearly 3000 organisations have also offered their support – more and more people are pledging to take part in the Year of Food and Farming every day!

Since last September hundreds of farmers, food producers and other organisations have been working to inspire a greater interest in food, farming and the countryside. Throughout the Year young people have been undertaking activities which have given them direct experience of seeing, growing and cooking to reconnect them with their food and how it is produced. Projects such as the recent B&Q; growing activity gave 175,000 primary school children the opportunity to grow their own tomato plants and find out about where food comes from.

Over this spring and summer the Year and our partner organisations will be organising activities at agricultural shows and food festivals across England so keep an eye on the Megamap or register for the general e-newsletter to find out about these events. Open Farm Sunday (1st June 2008) is also a fantastic opportunity for everyone to enjoy the countryside where you can discover at first hand what it means to be a farmer and taste their produce. Each event will be unique with its own activities based around the host farm’s own individual story. Activities during the day may include a farm walk, nature trail, tractor & trailer rides, pond dipping, activities for kids, mini farmers market or picnics.
