Lantra – providing the skills for a ‘Great’ UK

As a nation we rarely agree on what makes this country great. Some would argue that it’s our green and pleasant land, others that it’s our love of animals. Tourists love our heritage and gardens. Nearly all enjoy sport, recreation and the great British breakfast.

But who ensures we have a workforce equipped with the skills to deliver the things that make such a difference to our everyday lives? The answer is Lantra, working together with employers, training providers, government agencies and trade associations in the environmental and land-based industries.

Through consultation Lantra establishes the responsibilities needed to carry out the jobs within the 17 industries in its sector. Lantra then works with partners to develop courses and training that will develop the skills required, and set the standards necessary to attain qualifications or show competency.

A qualified workforce brings benefits to all: Workers feel valued, confident in their work and motivated; businesses enjoy better staff retention, greater efficiency and boosted profits; and the country shares in this success through greater job security and a healthier economy. Plus a higher skilled workforce is more able to compete in today’s global markets.

Without this who knows what life would be like in the UK?

The campaign events

As part of this national campaign, Lantra SSC is holding experiential roadshows in city centres this summer. We aim to promote the importance of our industries and their impact on people’s everyday lives to the media, stakeholders and the general public. The road shows planned are:

  • Victoria Gardens, Leeds – Friday 13th June 2008
  • Victoria Square, Birmingham – Friday 27th June 2008
  • Piccadilly Gardens, Manchester – Friday 11th July 2008

We would very much appreciate your help in suggesting a demonstration for the event. This is an excellent opportunity to showcase the skills of the sector through demonstrations from the full range of environmental and land-based industries. We need demonstrators for each of the venues and industries and would like the events to be as creative, entertaining and inspirational as possible.

All ideas – large or small, living or inanimate – will be considered! We've got a lot of space to fill and thousands of people to entertain.
