BROWNHILLS PRIMARY GIVES VEG A GO AT TOBY CARVERY CHEF SCHOOL
A class of budding Gordon Ramseys donned their chef hats and aprons for a behind the scenes peek at Toby Carvery this week.
Year 5 students from Brownhills West Primary School in Norton Canes were invited to their local Toby on
Watling Street to discover more about the journey vegetables make from the farm to their fork, including where different vegetables
grow and how.
As part of the two-hour interactive session the class learned about the importance of eating five portions of fruit and
vegetables a day, the nutritional content of vegetables, the numerous ways to cook them and even enjoyed blind folded samples
of different vegetables for themselves.
Pupils were then treated to a carvery demonstration by
Toby’s own master carver Andy Foley, before helping themselves to a delicious carvery meal
complete with an array of fresh vegetables.
Head teacher Mr Fairclough said: ‘The session was a brilliant way for the children to
learn more about healthy eating in a real restaurant environment. The chef school was really
well organised and the kids have learnt lots about how to cook different types of vegetable
and the nutrients they contain. In fact the sessions were so good that during the carvery lunch
many of the kids even tried vegetables that they had previously professed to hate!’
Sheelagh Pegg, Operations Director at Toby Carvery, said: ‘As an official partner
in the government’s Year of Food and Farming initiative we are committed to encouraging
children to eat a healthier diet but know that can be perceived as difficult in practice.
A traditional roast meal is a simple, tasty way of incorporating those all-important five
portions of vegetables, which is why we serve a selection of eight vegetables every day.
In fact, our statistics show that children are twice as likely to eat vegetables when they
come to a carvery as they are able to help themselves and choose what goes on their plate’.
The chef schools are now being rolled out to Toby Carvery restaurants across the country.
