HELPING KIDS UNDERSTAND FOOD AND FARMING MATTERS

Come rain or shine the Education Village at this year's Royal Show was a tremendous success as youngsters of all ages learnt about the food that makes up their daily diet.

Organised by Farming and Countryside Education (FACE) with support from HGCA and DairyCo, the Education Village attracted 5000 school children on Thursday and Friday and many more family groups over the weekend. Children could take part in a multitude of hands on activities including baking bread rolls, mixing a healthy smoothie, designing art work with grain, planting up herbs and trying out fun science experiments.

There was an undercover picnic area and a playground and other exhibitors included the entertaining Sheep Show, a children's farm, a cookery theatre, Museum on the Move bus and the new Asda Dairy Bus.

A trail around the showground was sponsored by Asda, the Co-operative, Sainsbury's and Waitrose and children collected stickers at each stand to earn a certificate back at the Education Village.

During the Show children were introduced to HRH Prince Charles as he toured the cattle lines and took the opportunity to find out what the children had learnt about different breeds of cattle.

FACE hopes to build on the success of the Education Village by attracting more educational exhibits and activities in 2009. For more information please visit: www.face-online.org.uk
