The Horticultural Development Council (HDC) is a statutory body who administer the collection of an 'industry levy' to fund essential near-market research and development for the benefit of UK horticulture.
With responsibility for over 300 edible and ornamental crop interests (not cereals or potatoes) in the UK, the HDC aims to serve British growers by being a top-class, efficient and progressive facilitator of near-market horticultural research, development and associated technology transfer.
The HDC has supported the ‘Year of Food and Farming’ initiative by joining forces with the four agricultural levy bodies in the UK (BPC, HGCA, MDC and MLC) to fund a new ‘Food and Farming’ module on the Food – A Fact of life website (www.foodafactoflife.org.uk). The Food – A fact of life website is a teacher resource site developed by the British Nutrition Foundation. Modules, all developed and based on various elements of the National Curriculum, include:
• Food and farming
• Healthy Eating
• Cooking at Food skills
