Welcome to Moorhouse Grange
My name is Tony Cooke and I am the Programme Director of the Year of Food and Farming - the person ultimately responsible for ensuring the Year is a blinding success! Just as importantly though, I am also very proud to be a farmer and have been 'walking the talk' on my own farm for the last ten years by hosting regular school visits, often from inner-cities across Yorkshire.
Moorhouse Grange is a conservation award-winning family run arable farm covering around 566 hectares (1400 acres). The farm has been a national 'LEAF Demonstration Farm' (chosen for its sustainable farming practices) since 2000. Cropping includes potatoes, winter wheat, oilseed rape and clover leys. We also have an extensive area of the farm (32 hectares or 80 acres) dedicated as wildlife habitats including features such as; beetle banks, nectar and pollen patches, wild bird strips, reedbeds, ponds and 6.5 hectares (16 acres) of rare magnesium limestone wildflower meadow currently under restoration.
The farm is CEVAS accredited for school visits and is a recipient of an Educational Access Grant from Natural England, so all visits to the farm are free. We have long experience of linking the visit to the curriculum and with a wealth of interest to study can work as well for secondary schools as for primary schools.
THIS SITE IS AIMED AT SCHOOLS, CHILDREN & FAMILIES - if you are a farmer, please see my blog on FWi at www.fwi.co.uk/tonycooke
