Growing
Take part in the Year and get growing
Growing is a simple, convenient and fun way to help children understand where their food
comes from. That’s why the Year of Food and Farming wants children and young people to
make a pledge to grow something.
Growing can support primary teaching on the life and living process from early years to 11.
In particular, it supports teaching about how things grow, where food comes from and the
importance of a balanced healthy diet. There are also opportunities to relate growing
activities to many other curriculum areas. You might want to think about making graphs to
chart progress in ICT, measuring growth through maths activities, or producing posters in
art and design.
There are growing activities that can take place indoors and others suitable for outside
spaces. There is plenty of advice available and even packs to support growing.
If you’re feeling adventurous, you might even be want to rear an animal and watch it ‘grow’.
There are resources to offer help and advice on setting up a school farm. As an alternative,
you and your pupils could watch eggs hatch in the classroom. However, any activity involving
animals needs careful consideration.
