The British Potato Council (BPC) is a non-commercial organisation. Technically it's a Government body (a so called Non-Departmental Public Body). It is funded by a levy on all British potato growers and those who trade their crop. Helping to educate children on where food comes from and the importance of healthy eating is set as a key priority by these levy payers.Over the last few years the BPC has been running a growing project for children called 'Grow Your Own Potatoes'. Now in its 4th year the project is a huge success with over 4000 primary schools, around 120,000 pupils, taking part in 2007. For the Year of Food and Farming the BPC is doubling the projects budget and hopes to involve 8000 primary schools across England, Scotland and Wales in 2008. With over 250,000 pupils expected to take part this year the BPC is strengthening the link between the potato industry and schools through an 'Adopt a School' scheme. This formalises the tremendous amount of work that farmers, packers, processors and potato merchants already do in educating children and will allow the BPC to build more resources to improve and extend the scope of the links between the potato industry and schools.
